Welcome to Kindergarten

Starting school is a big and exciting step for children and their families! We can’t wait to welcome our new Kindergarten students to Dundas Public School, where they will learn, play, and make new friends. This page has fun resources to help children and families get ready for this exciting adventure and make the transition to school easy and fun!

Transitioning to school for Kindergarten is a big step in the life of the child and their family.

Making this process as smooth as possible and supporting a successful start to school requires a partnership between the home and school, and time to build bonds and develop relationships that can support the child throughout their schooling.

At DPS we run a transition program which enables students to feel comfortable with the school facilities, the staff and children at our school. These routines help them to feel secure when starting school. The time spent in Kindergarten Transition gives the students the opportunity to use our playgrounds, library and canteen, meet our teachers and see the classrooms they will be learning in. They have the opportunity to make friendships that can support them in their start to school.

Students complete group and independent activities supporting early years' development and preparation for school.

Transition to school marks a significant step in the lives of our children. At DPS we understand the importance of providing for the social and emotional wellbeing of children and their families in promoting a lifelong love of learning.

Best Start Kindergarten Assessment

The Best Start Assessment is a tool to help teachers assess your child's skills as they enter school, and to tailor teaching to their individual needs. Teachers will sit with your child when they start school to assess your child's literacy and numeracy skills so that they can develop an appropriate teaching program that caters for your child.

No preparation is required for this assessment. This is generally completed within the first few weeks of Term 1.
